About Elizabeth Polito

I am a trained meteorologist, and I just completed my masters degree in Applied Geosciences from San Francisco State University in California. I have a BA in Liberal Studies, with an emphasis in science. In the beginning stages of my masters, I became fascinated by student conceptions and alternative conceptions, but was disappointed to discover that not much scientific research had been done in my field of meteorology. This led me to what would become my masters research—within the realm of science education research. The research question I explored was: What are students conceptions of fog, tornadoes, and wind; and how do they change among cognitive level—middle school students, university non-meteorology major students, and university meteorology major students? I conducted both a written phase, and a videotaped interview phase.

Goals for my blog

The goals for my blog will be to:

1) Provide a space to share interesting information on the different aspects of Earth and Space Science, science pedagogy, and science education research in the geosciences.

2) To engage TXESS Revolutionaries in conversations pertaining to:
a. Current news events in the Earth and Space Sciences
b. Science pedagogy
c. Reflections on classroom teaching
d. Journal articles in science education research

My plan is to post forum discussions once or twice a month, which will be open for a period of time. I will send an email out to inform of new postings on forum discussion and other blog posts.

I am sure that my goals will evolve over time, and I am always open to suggestions for forum discussions!
