Cryosphere Introduction

This summer, we will be training our summer TXESS Revolution teachers on the implementation of the EarthLabs cryosphere modules. To prepare for this (most likely in 100 degree temperatures), we need to have a way of introducting particpants to the crysophere.

Please review the NASA video tour of the cryosphere (http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/09/08/nasa-video-tour-of-the-cryosphere-...) and UTIG’s web site on the ice and ice covered lithosphere (http://www.ig.utexas.edu/research/overview/ice.htm?PHPSESSID=04161f3eb3d...).

After you have visited these sites, and any others that you come across, please post your ideas about how we can introduce participants to the cryosphere . You have two weeks to log your comments before we will move on to the next topic. Discussion ends on Monday, April 12.

Cheers,

Kathy

Before the introduction of the Cryosphere... Pre-Assessment

Greetings All,

I am in the process of going through the Cryosphere labs, and I watched the NASA video, which is very informative and visually stimulating.

As I was contemplating how to introduce this topic during the workshop, I thought that before it can properly be introduced, it would be good to first get a gauge of what conceptions and possible misconceptions the participants have about the Cryosphere.

Pre-Assessment is such a powerful tool in the classroom, and it can elicit an immense amount of data that can help to lead and facilitate discussions on the topic. And of course, when you ask the same assessment question for the post assessment, then you have valuable data on the conceptual change of your participants. The assessment prompt should be a higher order Blooms Taxonomy question/prompt, so that the responses are more than a one or two word response.

My suggestion is to start a discussion on possible assessment prompt(s) that could be used for both the pre-and the post-assessment question.

Not only do you want to discuss the prompt for the pre-assessment, but when you plan on giving the participants the pre-assessment, and how you are going to incorporate the responses into your training.

Pre-assessment

If you want to incorporate the responses from the pre-assessment in the training then we need to give it at the beginning of the summer session so we can have them to plan with. The questions could possibly be incorporated into the preassessment for the program (assuming that one will be given as in our cohort B trainings).

Preassessment

Celina:

That's a great idea. If you can send a few example questions between now and June 1, Elizabeth and I will look them over, and incorproate them with the other pre-assessment questions on field techniques. I think we should limit the number of questions to about 4.
